The Nuance OmniPage 17 trail offers industrial-strength OCR (optical character recognition) for office environments, but it comes at a premium price.
Bare in mind that, like Corel and Avanquest, Nuance.co.uk is a company that buys out other software companies to obtain their products line so Dragon Naturally Speaking, PDF Converter and PaperPort Do Not share the same origins.
As with Readiris Corporate 12 (packed with advanced features and accurate text-recognition, but struggles with complex layouts), OmniPage 17 can be used to recognise text (in over 120 languages) and output that to all sorts of different document types.
As well as the ubiquitous Word, there's also the option to export to searchable PDF and the long-term archiving PDF/A format, as well as myriad other document types and destinations.
You can save to the eBook OPF file type, WAV audio (yes, it does text-to-speech) and even document management systems such as Microsoft SharePoint and others.
Most people only ever encounter OCR software in the form of some stripped-down "Lite" package that's shipped with a scanner or all-in-one printer.
But, as OmniPage Professional 17, and rivals such as Readiris, there's an awful lot more to
OCR software than simply acquiring text and dumping it out to Microsoft Word.
Reversed text blocks against black backgrounds were recognised and scanned more reliably, and most areas where Readiris fell down OmniPage did extremely well;
Picking up text next to graphics successfully, hardly requiring any training or tweaking.
From plain text to table-based content liberally sprinkled with images, it hardly put a foot wrong.
The disadvantages/ weakness/ negatives/ downside/ torrent/ of Omnipage 17 software is the interface and it's costly, but if you need accurate OCR for mass document digitisation, nuance omnipage 17 professional fits the bill admirably.
The batch processing feature is an extremely powerful tool.
This can be fine tuned as much as you like, with as much or as little user interaction as you want. Infact, the batch processing are one of the star features.
Wth OmniPage's batch processing, you can set it to watch a folder and then,
Recognise text automatically as images are dropped in, blacking out (or redacting) certain keywords as it goes, then email the results to a set address.
With OmniPage's workflows allowing you to completely customise the way this works, the possibilities are almost endless.
miss. It's not particularly well laid out, nor is it easy to use straight off the bat;
But with a proper workflow set up or completely
automated, most users need never get involved
with the ugly, frame-based front end.
Nuance claims that OmniPage 17 loads up to
200 percent faster than previous OmniPage 16
version.
But, like the increase in accuracy, this impressive statistic is tempered by the fact that older omnipage 16 pro versions weren't exactly slow to load.
So what's OmniPage 17 like in terms of accuracy? Well, if you present it with a scan of a simple page of A4 text it's highly likely to deal with it without fault. Indeed, in our tests it coped admirably.
OVERALL Nuance OmniPage 17
OmniPage Professional 17 does its job admirably well, works extremely accurately and is more efficient and easy to use than its main competitor.
If you're in the market for batch processing, super accurate OCR software, this is your best bet.
Iowever, if you're the proud owner of OmniPage 16, it's unlikely the new features in version Omanipage 17 will be enough to persuade you to part with your cash.
There's no doubt it's a hugely impressive OCR package, but there simply aren't enough useful brand new features.
Owners of OmniPage 15 version and lower, however, will find more value in an OmniPage 17 upgrade. And at this price, the standard edition won't break the bank.

Changes hard copies of documents to various file types
Omnipage is simple and quick to install and once I had located the manual located on the
disc it was easy to understand how to scan pages and then save them in different formats.
As a teacher I often find myself typing out extracts from books to share with the chidren
and so I thought that this product could save me some time.
After setting up my scanner with the software I decided to scan in the first few pages of
a novel. It was really quick and within seconds I had a few pages on the screen.
Next I clicked a button which performs the OCR (Optical Character Recognition) which quickly
scans the text and highlights non-recognisible words.
I then went through the text to correct the mistakes made by Ominpage and there were
quite a few!
Considering this is Omnipage 17 I did not expect so many mistakes and it took me a little
while to read through a few pages and correct it.
There seemed to be a particular problem with 'ri' and 'n' and it highlighted '-' as an error.
This could possibly be a problem with that particular font or my scanner not being up to scratch but
I definately expected more from this product.
The files can then be saved as a variety of documents including using word. Overall it
did save me some time as it would have taken me much longer to type out the text.
I would recommend it if you are reglarly using a large amount of scanned paper. If you just occassionally need the odd page then it wouldn't be worth using this.

Does the job...
I have tried most of the OCR applications out there and this one continues to improve and
keeps its place at the head of the pack.
The application is slow to install and slow to load in use but once it fires up and gets
going it does a good job.
Like most OCR apps it improves with use as it remembers peculiarities of handwritten
script and build up a user dictionary. That said it will good a pretty good job straight from the box.
There are several versions of this program with a greater or lesser set of features but for
most people this one will cover all their needs.
If you need a good well specified OCR product and don't need too many whistles and bells
then this will fit the job.

Pretty Good
I've been using OmniPage since version 8, back in the mid 90s. The program has always been
very good at dealing with clear fonts, but was never good with handwriting, which I didn't hold against
it,
As it was early days, but really OmniPage hasn't moved that far away from it's principal goal,
to scan in documents and make them digital.
OmniPage does this well, with around 90% accuracy with the documents I have tested.
Obviously sometimes it gets stuff muddled and doesn't really like certain letters close together.
Accents in French were the worst thing, but now it seems to handle them a lot better than it
did with the old editions.
I like the way now you can make PDFs of your scans, even making MP3 files so you can listen
to a document while you travel, cutting down the time you have to spend reading.
This is good for getting things into Word, PDF or any other program, so if you have an old
balance sheet you can simply put it in Excell without any hassle.
Obviously it's not perfect, but it does do what would take you a while to re-type or assemble
in a DTP program.
Better than Paperport in many ways, but still not as flexible or easy to use.

Few mistakes, but should improve.
I have found Nuance Omnipage 17 fairly straight forward to use, and this is
the first time I have used programmes of this type.
There were some corrections I had to make, but hopefully this will improve over time.
I use it on windows XP with a Canon Pixma multifunction printer and scanner.
It is useful for reducing the amount of actual paper work I have to store.
I would recommend this to those that have a lot of paper work to file.
